Count The Merch

The per-piece count, in writing, before the order is placed.

A price is a guess until the piece is counted: what the blank costs, what the print costs, what rides on every single piece, and what the run costs before piece one sells. This free tool counts the piece whole — the margin per piece and the number of pieces that have to sell before the run is out of the hole — before any order is placed. Everything runs in your browser — nothing you type is sent anywhere.

— The Count — What One Piece Really Costs

Your numbers, off the quotes in front of you. Blank money boxes count as zero; a box with something in it has to be a real number or the count won't stand. The one-time costs — setup, screens, freight in — are spread across the run, rounded to the cent per piece, the way they land. If the price doesn't clear the per-piece costs, the count says so plainly instead of inventing a break-even.

What rides on every piece

What the run costs once

Cost per piece, all in
—
per-piece costs + the once-costs spread over the run
Margin per piece
—
price − cost per piece
Break-even
—
pieces that must sell to cover the once-costs
The run, all in
—
every piece + the once-costs
If every piece sells, the margin on the run
—
revenue if sold out, against the whole cost of the run

Put the price, a per-piece cost, and the size of the run in — the sheet prints when the piece is counted.
